28 January 2022

Each year, on the 30th of January, RE/MAX offices around the globe celebrate National Balloon & Founders Day. The day serves to acknowledge the official inauguration of the RE/MAX brand that occurred on January 30, 1973.

Forty-nine years ago, RE/MAX introduced the concept of the 100% commission model into the real estate environment in Denver, Colorado. Dave Liniger, RE/MAX LLC Co-Founder & Chairman, set out to create an organisation where everybody wins – from the customers to the agents, broker owners, employees, and everybody in between. It is this ethos that has launched the brand into its successful trajectory.

Since its inception, the brand has grown to be the largest real estate franchisor across the globe. For the 38th year in a row now, RE/MAX is ranked among the top-rated franchise brands, according to Entrepreneur’s 2022 Franchise 500® survey.

Locally, RE/MAX was introduced into the South African market by Peter and Val Gilmour back in 1995. The first RE/MAX office opened in Cape Town and has since expanded to over 2,800 agents operating out of 161 offices and licensed in five countries in the Southern Africa region.

“Compared to our local competitors, we are the largest real estate company by number of agents and we complete more sales than any other real estate brand operating in our region. Over the past two years, we have also concluded record-breaking reported sales totals and record-breaking recruiting numbers,” explains current Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, Adrian Goslett.

He adds that in December 2021, the brand broke over R4 billion in registered sales. “This is the highest ever in company history. On average, over the course of 2021, it took just 61 days before a listing was marked as sold on remax.co.za. That means that on average, our agents were listing a selling a home in just under two months. It is no wonder then that we were able to hit such record-breaking sales totals,” Goslett remarks.

“Of course, none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for those brave few who took a chance on a new brand back when it was introduced to the South African market some 26 years ago. I want to thank all our founding members for introducing this concept and laying the groundwork for future success. I have no doubt that the brand will continue to grow from strength to strength thanks to the hard work of those who came before us and those who continue to work hard to grow the RE/MAX legacy even further,” Goslett concludes.

To celebrate the day, RE/MAX offices across the globe will be hosting events, displaying as much RE/MAX branding, balloons and banners as possible and wearing red, white & blue to show their passion for the brand.
